Vela Chacao, sponsoredby Cultura Chacao, marked the entrance into the Avila MountainNational Park at Sabas Nieves. It celebrated the ritual thousandsof citizens and tourists perform daily as recreation and exercise, hiking up the hill from roughly 1000 m to 1300 meter above sealevel.

The installationhovered above the paved walkway at approximately 5 meters, suspended between the fenced walls that mark the access space of nomore than 4 meters in width. On weekends vendors sell juices andsoft drinks creating a colorful streetscape of umbrellas andbottles. Nonetheless, the thick canopy of tall trees reaches evenhigher altitudes and lends its shade to the transient space. Theyalso create a dynamic play of colors as patches of shadows are caston to the translucent sails and fragments of green and sky peakbetween the triangulated surfaces. At certain hours of the day Velacasts its own shadow onto the pavement, registering its geometrytogether with that of the surrounding vegetation.
