Vela American Academy in Rome2006
American Academy in Rome, Italy

Vela was installed over the path through the Bass Garden of the American Academy for the Open Studio exhibition of May 2006. It represents a prototype for the later installation on Vicolo de' Catinari which was entirely redone with important structural changes. This initial version consists of a series of three groups of sails, suspended over the walkway using long bamboo stems and string. The sails themselves are made out of a translucent plastic textile, nylon and metal. Exposed to the open air, sun and wind, the sails perform a beautiful dance and sing, at the same time casting dynamic shadows that register the air´s movement on the ground. A simple walk became a procession that allowed the user to become aware of the length of his step over the cast triangles and the intervals of time between stripes of shade and light.
