Proyecto Helicoide: Fantastic Visions2014

The Helicoide building was originally designed to serve as a shopping center; however its construction was abruptly halted and later appropriated for uses that are less than flattering of its eccentric shape.

Another important transformation has occurred in the surrounding context of the building. Where it once sat as a monumental piece over a bucolic range of hills, it soon began sharing the setting with informal settlements that share the site. The piece focuses on showing the close geographical and topographical relationship between the Helicoide and the barrios.

In the barrrios of San Agustín and the Cota 905 to the East and West of the Helicoide, the foundations of each housing structure have modified the ground plane through an organic process over 50 years. The accumulated density of the structures registers ground movements that recall those that were required to build the Helicoide.

The piece is a transverse section at 1:300 of the Helicoide and the barrios on both sides. The section has been cut into several layers of paper in order to show the depth of the sectioned interior spaces. This creates the effect of a model 3 meters wide, 70 cm in hight and 3 cm deep that registers 1km of urban fabric in an East- West direction through the center of the Helicodie. It also recognizes the 60 m difference in height between the Fuerzas Armadas Avenue and the crest of the hills.

A topographical sequence of interior spaces emerges that follow the morphology of the hills and the Helicoide through cut squares and rectangles in various layers of depth. Finally, hypothetical tunnels and staircases connect the place with an imaginary sub-urban interpretation of the built territory.
